Green cleaning: choosing eco-friendly products that still work
Eco-friendly cleaning has come a long way. For most everyday jobs, gentler products do the work just as well, especially when combined with the right tools and technique.
What to look for
- Clear ingredient lists. Brands that tell you what’s inside are easier to trust.
- Fragrance-free or low-fragrance options. Useful for people with sensitivities, and in childcare and medical settings.
- Concentrates and refills. Less packaging and less transport.
- Recognised environmental certifications. Look for independent labels rather than vague claims like “natural”.
Technique matters as much as product
- Microfibre cloths lift dirt with less chemical, and they can be washed and reused
- Give products dwell time to work before wiping
- Work top to bottom, dry to wet, clean to dirty
- Use colour-coded cloths so bathroom cloths never touch kitchens
When you might still need stronger products
Heavy grease, mould, and areas with specific hygiene requirements may need specialised products. A good cleaner will explain the options and use them carefully.
Simple swaps at home
- A microfibre cloth and water for most glass and stainless steel
- Bicarb soda paste for light scrubbing
- Ventilate while cleaning and never mix products, especially bleach with anything acidic or ammonia-based
